For those who travel to Romania, a road trip to Balea lake – on top of the Transfagarasan road, one of the most beautiful roads in the world, in my opinion (and the best as the Top Gear Show declared) – should be a must. The view is incredible, the road is in a good state, and there are many places one can stop to admire the mountains.
I admit I am a huge fan of this road, and I love to go on it yearly (if possible). It is open starting June 15th (depending on when the snow melts, though on the top you will always find snow!) and ends in September. The Balea Lake is splendid – there is also a cabin here you can stay at – and, as a plus, during the winter, here is an ice hotel!
The air is fresh; everything is green. It is a lot colder than at the base (which is a huge plus for me, as I hate the heat). You have small waterfalls on the road. You can climb the mountain – even a little when you reach the peak, as I always do. There is a bigger and splendid waterfall nearby (Balea waterfall), easily accessible. Last, but not least, the view is amazing!
And, if you don’t believe me, here’s a photo from the Balea Lake area.
What a gorgeous picture! I’ll add this to my list for whenever I get to Romania 🙂
I enjoying, will read more. Thanks!
